COME TO ASTURIAS!!

Tourist guides and classic posters in the collection of the Muséu del Pueblu d'Asturies
1899 – 1987

From the end of the 19th century, Asturias was promoting tourism through the publication of guidebooks and advertising posters. The image of the region promoted was essentially the same as the one that has survived to the present day. A landscape with green mountains, seaside, rural villages, where the 'hórreo' becomes an icon, and history, including Covadonga sanctuary and pre-romanesque art, were sold as major attractions to visit Asturias. First tourists were attracted by th slogan 'Asturias, the Spanish Switzerland ' and it was Antonio Pérez Pimentel who launched 'Asturias, the tourist's paradise' in the 1920s.

This exhibition focuses on classic posters promoting Asturias from 1929 to 1987, both from public and private sources, and also a selection of guides and brochures, published between 1899 and 1981, which often accompanied tourist campaigns. Classic posters are signed by renowned artists and illustrators, who used a modern graphic language, such as Vaquero Palacios, Moré, Alfonso, Morell, Teodoro Delgado or Juan Gomila.

The Muséu del Pueblu d'Asturies has been acquiring all these materials over the last twenty years in order to learn about and preserve the image of Asturias in the 20th century.
