by César García de Castro

(Please be punctual and admission is free until the hall is full

The lecture will deal with the inseparable binomial of the historical figure of Pelayo and the war of Cuadonga/Covadonga based on the analysis of the Asturian chronicles and the Arab written sources.

García de Castro is an archaeologist at the Archaeological Museum of Asturias and his research activity focuses on the study of the Early Middle Ages in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and its European context. He has also directed archaeological excavations in the cathedral of Oviedo/Uviéu and the early medieval buildings on Mount Naranco.

The Archaeological Museum of Asturias is organising a series of five conferences on the occasion of the exhibition of the same title, which was inaugurated on 22 December in the temporary exhibition hall as part of the programme of events to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the Battle of Covadonga organised by the Government of the Principality of Asturias. The aim of the exhibition is to provide an overview of the most recent archaeology carried out at important archaeological sites in Asturias and Cantabria, the core area of the Kingdom of Asturias, as well as to examine the figure of Pelayo and the Battle of Cuadonga/Covadonga from the analysis of written sources and to offer an insight into the society of the northwest of the peninsula at that time in history.
